Life introduction of Rahimdas
Kavi Rahim, also known as Abdul Rahim Khan-i-Khana, was a prominent poet and courtier in the court of the Mughal emperor Akbar during the 16th century. He was born in 1556 in Lahore, which is now present-day Pakistan. Rahim’s father Bairam Khan was a trusted advisor to Emperor Akbar.
Rahim received an excellent education and was fluent in various languages including Persian, Arabic and Sanskrit. He had a deep understanding of literature and philosophy, which greatly influenced his poetry. Rahim was particularly known for his proficiency in the Hindi language.
Despite being a Muslim, Rahim’s works reflected a synthesis of Hindu and Islamic cultural influences. He wrote under the pen name “Rahim” and is famous for his dohas or “couplets” which contained moral and spiritual messages. His couplets were simple yet profound, often using everyday situations and metaphors to express deep philosophical insights.
Rahim’s most famous literary work is the “Rahim Chalisa”, a collection of forty couplets that impart moral and ethical teachings. This work is widely read and recited by people across India and has become a part of popular folklore.
Rahim’s contribution to literature and skillful use of language earned him recognition and respect from both Hindus and Muslims. He had a close relationship with Emperor Akbar and was highly respected in the Mughal court. After Akbar’s death, Rahim continued to serve under Emperor Jahangir.
Poet Rahim’s life was not focused only on poetry and literature. He also held administrative positions and was known for his integrity and impartiality. Despite his high position, Rahim was humble and kind, often using his influence to help the poor and downtrodden.
Kavi Rahim’s legacy as a poet and philosopher continues to inspire generations. His couplets and couplets remain popular and are celebrated for their timeless wisdom. Rahim’s ability to bridge cultural divides through his poetry and the embodiment of his virtues makes him an important figure in Indian literature and history.
When Rahim was 5 years old, at the same time his father was murdered in Patan city of Gujarat (1561 AD). He was brought up under the supervision of Akbar himself.
Facts Of His Life :
Impressed by his efficiency, Akbar gave him the jagir of Patan on the occasion of his invasion of Gujarat in 1572 AD. He was continuously promoted during the reign of Akbar.
■ After the victory of Gujarat in 1576 AD, he got the governorship of Gujarat.
■ In 1579 AD, he was given the post of ‘Mir Arju’.
■ In 1583 AD, he suppressed the disturbance of Gujarat with great ability.
In 1584, Akbar was pleased and gave him the title of ‘Khankhana’ and the mansab of five thousand.
■ In 1589 AD, he was honored with the title of ‘Advocate’.
■ In 1604 AD, after the death of Shahzada Daniyal and Abul Fazal, he got full authority of the south. In the initial days of Jahangir’s rule, he continued to get the same respect.
■ In 1623 AD, when Shah Jahan was a rebel, he supported him against Jahangir.
■ In 1625 AD, he apologized and again got the title of ‘Khankhana’.
■ He died in 1626 AD at the age of 70 years.

रहिमन धागा प्रेम का, मत तोरो चटकाय.
टूटे पे फिर ना जुरे, जुरे गाँठ परी जाय||
Meaning: Rahim says that the relation of love is delicate. It is not appropriate to break it with a jerk. If this thread of love breaks once, then it is difficult to join it and even if it is found, there is a knot in the middle of the broken thread.

दुःख में सुमिरन सब करे, सुख में करे न कोय |
जो सुख में सुमिरन करे, तो दुःख काहे होय ||

रहिमन देखि बड़ेन को, लघु न दीजिए डारि.
जहां काम आवे सुई, कहा करे तरवारि||
Meaning: Seeing the elders, the younger ones should not be chased away. Because where the work of the small is done, the big cannot do anything there. Just as a sword cannot do the work of a needle.

रहिमन अंसुवा नयन ढरि, जिय दुःख प्रगट करेइ,

जैसी परे सो सहि रहे, कहि रहीम यह देह,

समय पाय फल होत है, समय पाय झरी जात।
सदा रहे नहिं एक सी, का रहीम पछितात||

रूठे सुजन मनाइए, जो रूठे सौ बार,

बानी ऐसी बोलिये, मन का आपा खोय |

खीरा सिर ते काटि के, मलियत लौंन लगाय।
रहिमन करुए मुखन को, चाहिए यही सजाय||
Meaning: To remove the bitterness of cucumber, after cutting its upper end, it is rubbed with salt. Rahim says that this punishment is right for the one who speaks bitter words.

रहिमन रीति सराहिए, जो घट गुन सम होय
भीति आप पै डारि के, सबै पियावै तोय||

संपत्ति भरम गंवाई के हाथ रहत कछु नाहिं

माह मास लहि टेसुआ मीन परे थल और
त्यों रहीम जग जानिए, छुटे आपुने ठौर||

रहिमन निज मन की बिथा, मन ही राखो गोय।
सुनी इठलैहैं लोग सब, बांटी न लेंहैं कोय||
Meaning: Rahim says that the sorrows of our mind should be kept hidden inside the mind. People may boast after listening to other’s sorrow, but there is no one to reduce it by sharing it.

वरू रहीम कानन भल्यो वास करिय फल भोग
बंधू मध्य धनहीन ह्वै, बसिबो उचित न योग||
Meaning: Rahim says that being poor it is not proper to live among brothers and relatives, it is better to go to the forest and eat fruits.

पावस देखि रहीम मन, कोइल साधे मौन।
अब दादुर वक्ता भए, हमको पूछे कौन||

वे रहीम नर धन्य हैं, पर उपकारी अंग।
बांटन वारे को लगे, ज्यों मेंहदी को रंग||

ओछे को सतसंग रहिमन तजहु ज्यों अंगार ।
तातो जारै अंग सीरै पै कारौ लगै||
Meaning: One should leave the company of mean people. It causes harm in every stage – as long as the ember remains hot, it burns the body and when it becomes cold coal, it still blackens the body.

वृक्ष कबहूँ नहीं फल भखैं, नदी न संचै नीर
परमारथ के कारने, साधुन धरा सरीर।

लोहे की न लोहार की, रहिमन कही विचार जा
हनि मारे सीस पै, ताही की तलवार||
Meaning: Rahim thinks and says that the sword will neither be called iron nor blacksmith, the sword will be called that of a hero who bravely kills the enemy by hitting his head.

तासों ही कछु पाइए, कीजे जाकी आस
रीते सरवर पर गए, कैसे बुझे पियास||

25.
रहिमन नीर पखान, बूड़े पै सीझै नहीं
तैसे मूरख ज्ञान, बूझै पै सूझै नहीं

साधु सराहै साधुता, जाती जोखिता जान
रहिमन सांचे सूर को बैरी कराइ बखान||

राम न जाते हरिन संग से न रावण साथ
जो रहीम भावी कतहूँ होत आपने हाथ

तरुवर फल नहिं खात है, सरवर पियहि न पान।
कहि रहीम पर काज हित, संपति सँचहि सुजान |
Meaning: Rahim says that trees do not eat their own fruits and even a lake does not drink its own water. Similarly good and gentle persons are those who accumulate wealth for the work of others.
29.
रहिमन ओछे नरन सो, बैर भली न प्रीत |
काटे चाटे स्वान के, दोउ भाँती विपरीत ||
Meaning: Neither friendship nor enmity is good with fallen people. For example, whether a dog bites or licks, both are not good.
30.
एकहि साधै सब सधैए, सब साधे सब जाय |
रहिमन मूलहि सींचबोए, फूलहि फलहि अघाय ||
Meaning: By working on one, everyone works. There is a possibility of leaving everyone by worshiping everyone – just like watering only the root of a plant, flowers and fruits all get water and they don’t need to be watered separately.

मथत-मथत माखन रहे, दही मही बिलगाय |
‘रहिमन’ सोई मीत है, भीर परे ठहराय ||
Meaning: A true friend is the one who supports you in times of trouble. Of what use is that friend, who separates at the time of trouble? Butter keeps on churning, but whey leaves the company of curd.

रहिमन’ वहां न जाइये, जहां कपट को हेत |
हम तो ढारत ढेकुली, सींचत अपनो खेत ||
Meaning: One should never go to such a place, where someone wants to get his own meaning by deceit. We draw water from the well with a dhenkuli with great effort, and the hypocrites irrigate their fields without effort.
33.
छिमा बड़न को चाहिये, छोटन को उतपात |
कह रहीम हरी का घट्यौ, जो भृगु मारी लात ||
Meaning: Forgiveness suits older people, and bullying suits younger ones. Means, it doesn’t matter if the younger ones misbehave, the elders should forgive the younger ones for this. If the younger ones indulge in mischief, then their enjoyment is also less. For example, even if a small insect is kicked, it does not cause any harm.
34.
बिगरी बात बने नहीं, लाख करो किन कोय।
रहिमन फाटे दूध को, मथे न माखन होय||
Meaning: Man should behave thoughtfully, because if something goes wrong for some reason, then it is difficult to make it, like if milk curdles once, even after a million attempts, butter cannot be extracted from it.
35.
खैर, खून, खाँसी, खुसी, बैर, प्रीति, मदपान.
रहिमन दाबे न दबै, जानत सकल जहान ||
Meaning: The whole world knows that well-being, blood, cough, happiness, enmity, love and intoxication cannot be hidden by hiding.
36.
आब गई आदर गया, नैनन गया सनेहि।
ये तीनों तब ही गये, जबहि कहा कछु देहि॥
Meaning: As soon as someone asks for something, the respect, honor and love of the eyes are gone. All three went away when they said that it gives something, that is, whenever you ask someone for something. Means begging is to drop yourself in your own eyes, so never do any work like begging.

जो रहीम ओछो बढै, तौ अति ही इतराय |
प्यादे सों फरजी भयो, टेढ़ों टेढ़ों जाय ||

38.
चाह गई चिंता मिटीमनुआ बेपरवाह |
जिनको कुछ नहीं चाहिए, वे साहन के साह ||

जे गरीब पर हित करैं, हे रहीम बड़ लोग।
कहा सुदामा बापुरो, कृष्ण मिताई जोग॥

रहिमन पानी राखिये, बिन पानी सब सुन |
पानी गये न ऊबरे, मोटी मानुष चुन ||

जो रहीम उत्तम प्रकृति, का करी सकत कुसंग।
चन्दन विष व्यापे नहीं, लिपटे रहत भुजंग||

रहिमन वे नर मर गये, जे कछु मांगन जाहि |

जो रहीम गति दीप की, कुल कपूत गति सोय,
बारे उजियारो लगे, बढे अँधेरो होय ||

चाह गई चिंता मिटीमनुआ बेपरवाह |
जिनको कुछ नहीं चाहिये, वे साहन के साह ||

बड़े काम ओछो करै, तो न बड़ाई होय।
ज्यों रहीम हनुमंत को, गिरिधर कहे न कोय॥

When Hanuman ji lifted Dholaigiri, he was not named ‘Giridhar’ because he brought the mountain king to the roof, but when Shri Krishna lifted the mountain, he was named ‘Giridhar’ because he lifted the mountain to protect all the people. .

माली आवत देख के, कलियन करे पुकारि।
फूले फूले चुनि लिये, कालि हमारी बारि॥
Meaning: Rahim Das ji says that seeing the gardener coming, the buds say that today he has picked flowers, but tomorrow it will be our turn too, because tomorrow we too will blossom and become flowers.

देनहार कोउ और है, भेजत सो दिन रैन।
लोग भरम हम पै धरैं, याते नीचे नैन ॥
Meaning Rahimdas ji says God is the giver who is giving us day and night. But people think that I am giving, so while giving charity, my eyes involuntarily fall down in shame.
53.
जे सुलगे ते बुझि गये बुझे तो सुलगे नाहि
रहिमन दाहे प्रेम के बुझि बुझि के सुलगाहि ||
Meaning :- The fire extinguishes after burning and does not burn again after extinguishing. After the fire of love is extinguished, it rekindles. Devotees burn in this fire.
54.
धनि रहीम गति मीन की जल बिछुरत जिय जाय
जियत कंज तजि अनत वसि कहा भौरे को भाय ||
Meaning :- It has been told in this Rahim Ke Dohe that the love of fish is blessed which dies as soon as it is separated from water. Bhora’s love is an illusion which takes the juice of one flower and immediately settles on another flower. One who loves only for his own selfishness is selfish.
55.
रहिमन’ गली है सांकरी, दूजो नहिं ठहराहिं।
आपु अहै, तो हरि नहीं, हरि, तो आपुन नाहिं॥
Meaning Rahimdas ji says that the street of the heart is very narrow, two people cannot stay in it, either you settle the ego or God in it.

अब रहीम मुसकिल परी, गाढ़े दोऊ काम।
सांचे से तो जग नहीं, झूठे मिलैं न राम ॥
Meaning Rahimdas ji says it is very difficult in this world if you support the truth the world will be angry with you if you lie in this world you will never find God.
57.
अंजन दियो तो किरकिरी, सुरमा दियो न जाय।
जिन आँखिन सों हरि लख्यो, रहिमन बलि बलि जाय॥
Meaning Rahimdas ji says that it is useless to apply kajal and antimony in these eyes, those who make God reside in these eyes, those people are blessed.

उरग तुरग नारी नृपति, नीच जाति हथियार।
रहिमन इन्हें संभारिए, पलटत लगै न बार ॥
Meaning Rahimdas ji says that one should always keep distance from snakes trapped in trouble, the most troubled horse, victim woman, king who burns in the fire of anger, crooked person and sharp edged weapon. You should be careful with them.

कहि रहीम संपति सगे, बनत बहुत बहु रीत।
बिपति कसौटी जे कसे, तेई सांचे मीत ॥
Arth Rahimdas ji says that those who have wealth, they also make many friends, but true friends are only those who stand the test of adversity. That means the one who supports in adversity is a true friend.
60.
कहु रहीम कैसे निभै, बेर केर को संग।
वे डोलत रस आपने, उनके फाटत अंग ॥
Meaning Rahimdas ji says that two opposite thinking people do not get along, if there are thorns on the berry tree, then the banana tree becomes soft. When the gust of wind causes the jujube branches to shake wildly, every part of the banana tree bursts.
61.
रहिमन मनहि लगाईं कै, देखि लेहू किन कोय।
नर को बस करिबो कहा, नारायन बस होय॥
Arth Rahimdas ji says that if you try to do any work with passion, then you will definitely succeed because with passion even Narayan can be done in the bus.
62.
गुन ते लेत रहीम जन, सलिल कूप ते काढि।
कूपहु ते कहूँ होत है, मन काहू को बाढी॥
Meaning Rahimdas ji says that just as water can be extracted from a deep well by filling a bucket, in the same way love can be created in anyone’s heart by doing good deeds.
63.
कहु रहीम केतिक रही, केतिक गई बिहाय।
माया ममता मोह परि, अन्त चले पछिताय ॥
Meaning Rahimdas ji says just think how much life has been saved and how much has been wasted because illusion, love and attachment are momentary pleasures of the world but spiritual happiness is permanent happiness.
64.
कहा करौं बैकुंठ लै, कल्प बृच्छ की छाँह।
रहिमन ढाक सुहावनो, जो गल पीतम बाँह॥
Arth Rahimdas ji says that I don’t want the happiness of heaven and the shade of Kalpavriksha, I like that Dhak tree very much where I can sit with my beloved’s neck.
65.
दादुर, मोर, किसान मन, लग्यौ रहै धन मांहि।
पै रहीम चाकत रटनि, सरवर को कोउ नाहि ॥
Poets have depicted the Chatak bird as a separation in a very poignant and heart-warming way. In the view of poets, there is a strong expression of separation in the call of Chatak. In this couplet, Rahim has described Chatak’s call as incomparable.
Rahim says, the mind of the frog, the peacock and the farmer is fixed in the clouds. As soon as clouds appear in the sky, as if new life comes in all of them. His passion for the clouds cannot be compared to Chatak. On seeing the cloud, Chatak’s separated mind gets disturbed in the memory of Piya. It is proved by his distraction that no one else’s mind is as much in the clouds as he is.
66.
धन थोरो इज्जत बड़ी, कह रहीम का बात।
जैसे कुल की कुलवधु, चिथड़न माहि समात ॥
Rahimdas ji says that respect is greater than money, if money is little, but respect is big, then it is not a condemnable thing. The women of the family house protect their honor even by wearing rags.
67.
प्रीतम छवि नैनन बसि, पर छवि कहां समाय ।
भरी सराय रहीम लखि, आपु पथिक फिरि जाय ॥
Meaning Rahimdas ji says how can another image reside in the eyes in which the beautiful image of the beloved resides.
68.
बड़े बड़ाई ना करें, बड़ो न बोलें बोल ।
रहिमन हीरा कब कहै, लाख टका है मोल ॥
Meaning: Rahim says that those who have greatness never brag about themselves. Like a diamond, no matter how priceless it is, it never praises itself through its mouth.
69.
नाद रीझि तन देत मृग, नर धन देत समेत ।
ते रहिमन पसु ते अधिक, रीझेहुं कछु न देत ॥
Meaning Rahimdas ji says that being captivated by the sound of music, the deer hands over its body to the hunter. And man loses his life by money. But those people also died from the animal, which gives nothing even when it is satisfied.

मान सहित विष खाय के, संभु भए जगदीस ।
बिना मान अमृत पिए, राहु कटायो सीस ॥
Meaning Rahimdas ji says that when Shiva swallowed poison with respect, he was called Jagdish, but due to lack of respect, Rahu drank nectar and beheaded him.

को रहीम पर द्वार पै, जात न जिय सकुचात।
संपति के सब जात हैं, बिपति सबै लै जात ॥
Rahim says that who is such a person in the world, who does not hesitate or hesitate while going to the door of another, but what to hesitate, everyone goes to the door of the rich. The reality is that people themselves do not go to the door of the rich. It is the calamity that takes them there.
There is a sense of saying – a person goes to the door of the rich only in the time of calamity. The rich also know this and do not consider the person who comes to the door as a beggar but a refuge and send him away lovingly by giving whatever he can.

जो रहीम मन हाथ है, तो मन कहुं किन जाहि।
ज्यों जल में छाया परे, काया भीजत नाहिं ॥
Meaning Rahimdas ji says that one who has control over his mind, his body cannot go anywhere, even if he attains the greatest of evils. Just as the body does not get wet due to reflection in water. That is, by cultivating the mind, the body automatically becomes healthy.
73.
दीन सबन को लखत है, दीनहिं लखै न कोय।
जो रहीम दीनहिं लखत, दीनबन्धु सम होय ॥
Meaning Rahimdas ji says that everybody sees the poor, but no one sees the poor. One who cares for the poor with love, helps them, he becomes like God for the poor.
74.
दुरदिन परे रहीम कहि, भूलत सब पहिचानि।
सोच नहीं वित हानि को, जो न होय हित हानि ॥
Arth Rahimdas ji used to say that when bad days come in life, everyone forgets to recognize them. At that point, if you continue to receive respect and love from kind people, the pain of losing money subsides.
75.
रहिमन कबहुं बड़ेन के, नाहिं गरब को लेस ।
भार धरे संसार को, तऊ कहावत सेस ॥
Meaning Rahimdas ji used to say that great people are those who do not have ego. It is wrong to think that a rich man is great, he is never proud of anything. He helps everyone in happiness and sorrow, thinks well of everyone, that is, bears the burden of the whole world, he deserves to be called Sheshnag.
76.
रहिमन विद्या बुद्धि नहीं, नहीं धरम जस दान ।
भू पर जनम वृथा धरै, पसु बिन पूंछ विषान ॥
Rahimdas ji used to say that one who does not have intelligence and does not like education, who has not done religion and charity and has not achieved fame in this world; That person is born as a waste and a burden on the earth. The only difference between an ignorant person and an animal is the tail. i.e. this person is a tailless animal
77.
रहिमन पर उपकार के, करत न यारी बीच ।
मांस दियो शिवि भूप ने, दीन्हो हाड़ दधीच ॥
Meaning: Rahimdas ji used to say that one should not think about selfishness, friendship etc. while donating. King Shiva donated his body and Dadhichi Rishi donated his bones. That’s why one should not hesitate to sacrifice his life in charity.
78.
धन दारा अरु सुतन , सो लग्यो है नित चित ।
नहि रहीम कोऊ लख्यो , गाढे दिन को मित॥
Meaning: Rahimdas ji says that a man should not always concentrate his mind on wealth, youth and children. Because none of them will support you when you need it! Put your mind in devotion to God because he will support you in times of difficulty.
79.
मांगे मुकरि न को गयो , केहि न त्यागियो साथ।
मांगत आगे सुख लह्यो , ते रहीम रघुनाथ।।
Meaning: Rahimdas ji used to say that everyone refuses to give what a man asks for and no one gives it to him. People leave their company in that person. It is better to be happy than the one who asks on whom God himself is bountiful.
80.
रहिमन तब लगि ठहरिये, दान मान सम्मान।
घटता मान देखिये जबहि, तुरतहि करिए पयान।।
Meaning: Rahim Das ji says that a man should live somewhere as long as he has respect and service. When you notice that your self-esteem is being eroded, you should leave immediately.
